Provide an additional 12 seconds of gas coverage if you can at this point throw another smoke grenade into the gas to protect it. The gas grenade has a 30-second cool-down period, so 3 seconds after the gas canister ends, you should be able to throw another gas grenade if you need it. If your team manages to add a powder canister or smoke grenade to the gas, there's no way for your opponents to ignite it, no matter how long they try to burn it with a flamethrower. They will die trying if they're standing in the gas. If you're the team trying to apply gas and there's already an active pyro grenade, don't throw a gas grenade because the flames will immediately ignite it, so you'll need to throw a gas canister instead if you have one nearby so that there's a 15-second delay on it exploding, or you can shoot it once the flames have subsided, and that'll explode it straight.

You can get away with throwing the gas grenade the moment the flames start to diminish, though they won't set it off when they're very small. Other locations you might consider using gas are any sort of bottleneck that your opponents have to pass through, like Bridges or Steer Wells.
